The School from Good Will Hunting

Most people have heard of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT, as it is often called. Even more so because it was featured prominently in the movie Good Will Hunting. MIT has been one of the top schools in the world for science and technology majors. It consists of five schools, one college with 32 academic departments and an online university as well. The school is a private research university that was founded in 1861 in response to America’s increased industrialization. From the very start, MIT emphasized laboratory instruction and hands on training. In the 1930’s they increased their scientific research focus. Their research has been influential in computers, radar, robotics, biology, economics and many other fields. They especially worked closely with the department of defense during they World War 2 and the Cold War. Another famed school study is “hacking” or the art of practical jokes and pranks. Of course at MIT it is taken to an extreme and elaborate level.
They boast an impressive faculty of 1,000 staff including many Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science recipients. In 2009, they managed an impressive $718.2 million in research expenditures and an $8 billion endowment. They are simply the best research school in the country. Just outside of Boston, their 168 acre campus extends over one mile down the northern bank of the Charles River Basin. Ironically enough, this top rated school shares the same home town of another top rated school: Harvard. Both are in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
MIT greatly encourages an entrepreneurial spirit and a few of the numerous companies founded or co-founded by MIT alum include: Intel, McDonnell Douglas, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Bose, Raytheon and even Campbell Soup. In fact, one researcher found that if you combined the revenues of companies founded by MIT graduates they would constitute the 11th largest economy in the world.
The top ranked MIT just happens to be located in the same town as another top ranked school, Harvard. Both are situated just outside of Boston in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They have had many prestigious alumni ranging from physicist, economist, political leaders and one third of NASA’s astronauts, the most famous of which is Buzz Aldrin.
MIT is also known for its creative and progressive architecture. They founded the first architectural school in the United States and have always prided themselves on inventive buildings. Some of the more famous have been the Stata Center and Simmons Hall. Of particular note is what the students’ call the Infinite Corridor, and 825 ft. hallway that runs through the length of MIT’s main buildings. It is usually crowded and has even been used to study simulated traffic patterns. Twice a year, the corridor lines up with the plane of the ecliptic, causing sunlight to fill the entire corridor.
